What Covert’s Certified Pre-Owned Inspection Covers

September 14th, 2026 by

What the badge promises, what it costs extra, and when that premium is worth paying.

Walk two used Jeep Grand Cherokees onto the same lot, same year, similar miles, and one of them will be priced higher because it wears a “Certified Pre-Owned” badge. Most shoppers see that and assume it’s a marketing sticker. It isn’t. Certified Pre-Owned is a factory program from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram with published rules about which vehicles qualify, what gets inspected, and what coverage rides along after you sign. Here’s what actually sits behind the badge, so you can decide whether the difference in price is worth it to you.

The Definition

QUESTION ONE: WHAT DOES “CERTIFIED” ACTUALLY MEAN?

A regular used vehicle is sold as-is or with whatever coverage happens to be left from the original factory warranty. Nothing more is promised. It might be a great car. It might have had three owners and a rough life in between. You would not know without doing the digging yourself.

Certified Pre-Owned is different because the manufacturer sets the bar, not the individual store. A CDJR vehicle can only be certified if it falls inside specific age and mileage limits, passes a 125-point inspection performed by a dealership technician, and comes with a clean vehicle history report. Anything that fails a point on that inspection either gets repaired to standard or the vehicle doesn’t get certified. That’s the whole idea. The badge is a promise that somebody with a lift, a scan tool and a checklist went through the car before it went out front.

Worth saying plainly: certification is not a guarantee that a vehicle will never need repair. Used cars are used cars. What certification does is remove a big chunk of the unknown, and it puts factory-backed coverage behind the vehicle instead of leaving you on your own.

The Inspection

THE 125-POINT INSPECTION, AND WHAT IT’S REALLY LOOKING FOR

Both CDJR certification tiers require the same 125-point inspection. It is not a walk-around. The technician is checking mechanical, electrical, safety and cosmetic items across the whole vehicle, and the results are documented rather than done by feel.

Broadly, the checklist covers ground like this:

  • Powertrain: engine operation, cold start behavior, fluid condition and levels, leaks, transmission and transfer case function, driveline and axles
  • Brakes and suspension: pad and rotor measurements, brake lines, shocks and struts, steering components, alignment-related wear
  • Tires and wheels: tread depth, uneven wear patterns, matching sizes, spare and jack equipment present
  • Electrical and electronics: battery and charging system, lighting, wipers, HVAC output, infotainment, cameras, driver assistance features, key fobs
  • Safety systems: airbag and restraint status, stored fault codes, recall status
  • Interior and exterior condition: glass, panel condition, seats and trim, odors, door and liftgate operation

Recall status matters more than people expect. Any open recall has to be addressed before the vehicle can be certified, which is a genuinely useful thing on a truck or SUV that’s already a few years down the road.

The Two Tiers

TWO TIERS: STANDARD CPOV AND CPO GO

This is the part that trips people up. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram run two certification tiers, and they are not the same product. The tier is determined by the vehicle’s age and mileage, not by how nice it looks.

  Standard CPOV CPO Go
Vehicle age Up to about 5 years old 6 to 10 years old
Mileage Under 75,000 miles 75,001 to 120,000 miles
Inspection 125-point inspection 125-point inspection
Powertrain coverage 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty from the original in-service date Coverage terms differ from standard CPOV. Ask us for the specifics on the vehicle you’re considering
Comprehensive coverage 3-month/3,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty Ask us for the current terms
Roadside assistance 24/7 roadside assistance included 24/7 roadside assistance included
Vehicle history CARFAX report with buyback guarantee CARFAX report with buyback guarantee

Why CPO Go exists

Plenty of good trucks and SUVs age past the standard window without falling apart. A 2018 Ram 1500 with 90,000 highway miles can be a genuinely solid vehicle. CPO Go gives that kind of vehicle a path to certification, with the same 125-point inspection, so buyers shopping the older end of the market aren’t stuck choosing between a certified car they can’t afford and a total unknown.

How the age limit is counted

Age runs from the model year, and the powertrain coverage on a standard CPOV vehicle runs from the vehicle’s original in-service date, meaning the day the first owner took delivery. Two vehicles with the same model year can therefore have slightly different amounts of coverage remaining. Ask for the in-service date before you sign anything. It’s a one-line answer and it tells you exactly where you stand.

The Coverage

THE COVERAGE THAT COMES WITH A STANDARD CPOV VEHICLE

The 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty

Powertrain means the expensive stuff: engine, transmission, drive system. On a standard certified CDJR vehicle, that coverage runs seven years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. Buy a three-year-old Grand Cherokee with 40,000 miles and you’re looking at a meaningful stretch of factory-backed protection still on the clock. Alongside it sits a 3-month/3,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty covering a much wider range of components during the early ownership window, which is exactly when a hidden problem tends to surface.

Roadside assistance and the CARFAX guarantee

Every certified vehicle includes 24/7 roadside assistance. If you’re the kind of Austin driver who runs out to Marble Falls on weekends or commutes MoPac every morning, that’s not a throwaway benefit. You also get a CARFAX report carrying a buyback guarantee, which is the part most people skip past. It means somebody stands behind the history report itself, not just hands you a printout.

The Price

SO WHY DOES A CPO VEHICLE COST MORE?

Because real work and real coverage got added to it. Reconditioning a vehicle to certification standard costs money: tires, brakes, fluids, recall work, whatever the inspection turned up. The warranty has a cost. The roadside program has a cost. None of that appears out of thin air, so a certified vehicle carries a higher price than a comparable non-certified one sitting next to it.

Whether that premium is smart depends on how you think about risk. One transmission repair or one significant engine job can easily exceed the price gap between a certified and a non-certified version of the same vehicle. If you’re financing, the premium spreads across the loan into a modest monthly difference, while an unplanned repair arrives all at once. Buyers who plan to keep a vehicle several years and drive it hard, towing a boat to Lake Travis, hauling job-site gear up US-290, tend to come out ahead with certification. Someone buying a cheap third car to park at the office may reasonably decide otherwise.

Budget For This

BUDGET FOR THIS TOO

Some things catch used-vehicle buyers off guard in Texas, certified or not:

  • Sales tax: Texas charges 6.25% on vehicle purchases. On a used truck that’s a real number, so work it into your budget before you fall in love with a payment.
  • Emissions testing: Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles as of January 1, 2025, but emissions testing still applies in 17 counties, and Travis County is one of them. Hays County is not.
  • Maintenance you inherit: Certification means the vehicle met standard at the time of inspection. It does not pre-pay your next set of tires or your next brake job. Ask what was replaced during reconditioning so you know what’s fresh and what isn’t.
  • Extended protection: Mopar FlexCare is available for purchase if you want coverage beyond what certification includes, in several tiers, with roadside assistance, rental benefit and trip interruption coverage up to $1,000 for trips more than 100 miles from home.

Common Questions

FAQ

Is a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle the same as a used vehicle with a dealer warranty?

No. CPO is a factory program with manufacturer-defined eligibility rules, a required 125-point inspection, and factory-backed coverage. A dealer-added warranty on an ordinary used car is a separate product and doesn’t involve any of that.

Does the 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty start when I buy the vehicle?

It runs from the vehicle’s original in-service date, not your purchase date. Ask for that date so you know exactly how much coverage remains on the vehicle you’re considering.

Can a vehicle with over 100,000 miles be certified?

Yes, through CPO Go, which covers vehicles roughly 6 to 10 years old with 75,001 to 120,000 miles. It gets the same 125-point inspection as a standard CPOV vehicle, though the coverage terms are different.
