2027 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE: THREE NEW TRIMS HIT AUSTIN
Three new trims, one crowded middle of the lineup, and a clear way through it.
The 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup got wider, not just refreshed. Three trims join the ladder for this model year: Laredo Upland, plus the returning Trailhawk and Overland names that a lot of Hill Country Jeep people have been asking about since they disappeared. If you have been waiting to replace a Grand Cherokee and you want to know where the new stuff actually lands, here is the plain version from our lot on Sweetwater Village Drive.
The Lineup
THE 2027 TRIM LADDER, TOP TO BOTTOM
Jeep now runs ten rungs on the two-row Grand Cherokee. In order: Laredo, Laredo X, Laredo Altitude, Laredo Upland, Trailhawk, Overland, Limited, Limited Altitude, Limited Reserve, and Summit at the top. The three new ones slot into the middle of that stack, which is exactly the part of the lineup that used to feel thin. Before 2027 you jumped from a loaded Laredo Altitude straight into Limited territory, and the shoppers who wanted more capability without more chrome had nowhere obvious to go.
That gap is what the new trims fill. Upland, Trailhawk and Overland are three different answers to the same question, and they are aimed at three genuinely different buyers.
The New Trims
WHAT EACH NEW TRIM IS ACTUALLY FOR
Laredo Upland: the value-forward capability trim
Upland sits directly above Laredo Altitude at $49,990 with destination included. Jeep has used the Upland name before as a rugged-flavored package rather than a full off-road overhaul, and that is roughly how it reads here: a Laredo-family Grand Cherokee dressed and equipped for people who take gravel county roads seriously but do not need a rock-crawling setup. If your weekend involves a caliche driveway in Spicewood or a boat ramp at Lake Travis, that is the Upland customer.
Worth being straight with you: Jeep has not published every line item on the Upland content list yet, and we are not going to guess at specs we have not seen on a build sheet. What we can tell you is where it prices and what it is positioned against, which is usually the part people actually need to make a decision.
Trailhawk: the one with the ground clearance
Trailhawk is the trim off-road folks have been waiting on, and it carries the number that matters. Up to 11.4 inches of ground clearance. That is the headline, and it is not a small figure for a unibody SUV that still has to behave itself on MoPac at 7:45 in the morning. Trailhawk starts at $54,995 with destination.
Here is the honest Austin read on it. Ground clearance that generous pays off in three situations around here: low-water crossings after a storm rolls through Dripping Springs, unimproved ranch roads west of 281, and the rutted approach to a hunting lease. If none of those are in your life, you are paying for capability you will admire and rarely use. That is fine, plenty of people buy it that way on purpose. Just buy it knowing which one you are.
Overland: comfort and capability without the Summit price
Overland returns at $57,895 including destination, and it plays a specific role. It is the trim for the buyer who wants the equipment level and the presence of the upper lineup but is not chasing the Summit badge. Historically Overland has meant a well-appointed Grand Cherokee with real capability underneath rather than a purely luxury-focused build, and it sits just under the Limited group in this year’s ordering.
Practically, Overland is where a lot of trade-ins are going to land. Someone in a five-year-old Limited who wants more truck than their old one had, but does not want to write a Summit-sized check, has an obvious target now.

The Engine Question
V6 OR THE 2.0L HURRICANE TURBO FOUR?
This is the question that trips people up, because the smaller engine is the stronger one. Jeep splits the lineup cleanly. Laredo and Laredo X run the 3.6L Pentastar V6 at 293 hp and 260 lb-ft. Everything from Laredo Altitude up, and that includes all three new trims, runs the 2.0L Hurricane 4 turbo four at 324 hp and 332 lb-ft.
So the four-cylinder makes 31 more horsepower and 72 more pound-feet than the six. The torque number is the meaningful one for how a vehicle feels in traffic, since it shows up lower in the rev range and it is what you notice merging onto 183 or pulling a grade out of Marble Falls. The Pentastar has a different personality: naturally aspirated, linear, familiar to anyone who has owned a Jeep in the last decade. Some buyers simply prefer it, and there is nothing wrong with that.
One thing worth saying out loud. The 4xe plug-in hybrid is gone for 2027. If you were planning around it, plan differently.
Towing
TOWING, AND WHAT THAT CEILING MEANS HERE
Max towing is 6,200 pounds properly equipped. That number holds across the lineup, so picking Trailhawk or Overland does not buy you a bigger trailer than a well-equipped Laredo would.
What 6,200 pounds covers around Central Texas:
- A typical two-horse bumper-pull or a mid-size travel trailer
- Most bass and ski boats headed to Lake Travis or Lake Marble Falls
- A loaded utility trailer for a Dripping Springs property
- Side-by-sides and small equipment on a tandem-axle trailer
Beyond that ceiling, a big fifth-wheel or a heavy stock trailer is more than this SUV should be asked to pull. If that is your load, we should be talking about a Ram instead, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a Grand Cherokee you will outgrow in a season.
The Third Row
NEED A THIRD ROW? LOOK AT THE L
Grand Cherokee L seats seven, runs about 10.4 inches longer than the two-row, and starts around $39,520. Families who tour both usually decide in the parking lot within five minutes. The extra length is real, and it matters in a Bee Cave school pickup line and in a downtown garage. If the third row will get used more than a few times a year, take the L. If it will not, the two-row drives smaller and parks easier.
Budget For This
BUDGET FOR THIS PART TOO
A few line items people forget when they are comparing sticker prices at home:
- Texas sales tax at 6.25% on the purchase. On a $54,995 Trailhawk that is real money, so build it into your number early.
- Leasing works differently in Texas. The leasing company pays tax upfront on the vehicle’s purchase price, and your monthly payments are not separately taxed. It changes the math more than people expect.
- Emissions inspection. Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles as of January 1, 2025, but Travis County is still one of the 17 emissions counties. Hays County is not.
- Coverage. A new 2027 Grand Cherokee carries a 3-year/36,000-mile basic limited warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty with roadside assistance. Jeep Wave ended after MY2025, so a 2027 does not include it. Mopar FlexCare is the current paid protection plan if you want to extend past the factory term.
The Straight Answer
WHAT WE WOULD TELL YOU IF YOU CALLED
Drive two of them back to back, not one. The gap between a Laredo Upland and a Trailhawk is about $5,000 and a specific kind of capability, and forty minutes behind the wheel of each settles it faster than any spec sheet will. We are at 16501 Sweetwater Vlg Dr Building 3, off Bee Cave Road, Monday through Saturday 9 to 7. Call sales at (512) 900-6192 and tell us what your weekends look like. That answers the trim question about 90 percent of the time.
Common Questions
FAQ
Which 2027 Grand Cherokee trims are new?
Three: Laredo Upland, Trailhawk and Overland. Trailhawk and Overland are returning names, and all three slot into the middle of the lineup between Laredo Altitude and Limited.
How much does the 2027 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk cost?
It starts at $54,995 with destination included. Laredo Upland starts at $49,990 and Overland at $57,895, both destination included.
Is the Grand Cherokee 4xe still available for 2027?
No. The 4xe plug-in hybrid is discontinued for the 2027 model year. Your engine choices are the 3.6L Pentastar V6 on Laredo and Laredo X, or the 2.0L Hurricane 4 turbo four on Laredo Altitude and everything above it.
How much can a 2027 Grand Cherokee tow?
Up to 6,200 pounds when properly equipped. That ceiling does not change by trim, so choose your trim for clearance, equipment and price rather than for towing.
